Ten Discoveries

About the Author - TEN DISCOVERIES THAT REWROTE HISTORY

Patrick Hunt is in the classics department at Stanford University, where he has been teaching archaeology, mythology and art history since 1994.  Featured on the History Channel and in Archaeology magazine for his Hannibal alpine research, Hunt directs Stanford’s Alpine Archaeology project in France, Italy and Switzerland.  Patrick Hunt's Hannibal Research is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

The ten discoveries he has highlighted in his latest book are also subjects of his own research – he has personally worked on the Rosetta Stone, the sites of Thera, Qumran and Machu Picchu, Egyptian materials from Tut’s tomb, Chinese Antiquities, early human remains, Dead Sea Scroll materials, Pompeii’s Roman roads, gems and paintings and Assyrian culture.

"Each of these exciting discoveries—whether deliberately sought or accidentally found—in the context of an evolving discipline since the 18th century influenced the intellectual and philosophical climates of the period when they were brought to light. Each of these discoveries changed perceptions of history and the future directions of field research. Subsequent generations of scholars may not agree on the most important archaeological discoveries, but is it highly likely that these discoveries will stand out forever both for archaeologists and all lovers of history." - Patrick Hunt, Ph.D.
